How To Serve God as a Writer

Hi beloved ones! I wanted to start a new series where I share ways to serve God right where you are. I’ll start off with creative talents/occupations first, because that’s my forte, but in the future I’d love to interview YOU ALL to get a take on serving God while being a teacher, nurse, etc. Stay tuned!

And for my fellow creatives . . . lets-a-go!!

Here are six ways to serve God if you enjoy writing.

1. IG Captions

Scribble down thoughts from your daily devos or Sunday church sermon, then post as captions on IG. What I usually do is star, underline, or highlight things that are catchy or really pop out to me. If I remember later (oopsie, haha) I’ll pull up my IG and wax eloquent in the caption.

2. Email Newsletter

You’d be amazed by the people who want to hear from you. I used to hear about missionary email newsletters, and when I moved to California I certainly felt like a kind of missionary.

“People might want to hear what God is doing in my life!” I thought. Sure enough, my mom’s friends banded together and really upped the count of my tiny newsletter haha.

But, you don’t have to be moving to start writing! Especially if a blog scares you, start here. Post on your IG and say you’re starting a newsletter. Write a list of how often to expect an email, and what will be inside (this offers expectations and value to your readers).

Even if you have three people…imagine standing at the front of the room and speaking to three people. That would still get me a little nervous!!

3. Blog

All right, you knew this was coming. But listen—just like writing a book, there are so many people who constantly say they want to do this . . . but don’t. So be the person to go for it!

Start by just posting once a month. Choose a day, then plan ahead. Then bump it to two times a month. I found that 1-2 times a week worked best for me, but you can up your count to whatever is most comfortable (and realistic) for you.

There are so many young girls and women that need good, godly mentors. Be that person!

4. IG reel

Write a short, snappy thought from devotions and add to a cute video to make an IG reel. This is like the caption idea, but brings video into the mixture . . . and possibly more views since IG favors video content.

I’ve found that filming a flower waving in the breeze, or the leaves of trees gently tossing around are really nice as the background to an inspirational verse/quote. You can expand on the idea in the caption if you want!

5. Devotional

Try your hand at writing a devotional! Choose a general topic, then break down into 3-8 chapters. Start as small as you want! You can use Canva, Google Docs, or Word to format your finished product. You can publish for free online as an ebook, or sell through Amazon or Lulu. (Don’t forget, though, that the goal shouldn’t ultimately be money but rather expanding God’s Gospel to others and making disciples!)

6. AT CHURCH: Helping around

For each post, I want to highlight a specific activity you can participate in at church. My graphic design professor told us that, all our lives, just like we tithe our money, we should tithe our talent by offering our services to the church. As a writer, you can offer to help with your church’s newsletter, church bulletin, or even writing VBS play scripts when the time comes around. Get creative!

If there aren’t any obvious ways you can help, just ask your youth group leader or small group pastor. They can connect you with an area you can help out.

Are there any other ways you can think of as a writer you can glorify God with writing? Comment them below!
