Culture Self Image

when you’re not in the birkenstocks club

I can tell you in a second what is “in” right now.

Everyone wants to go to greenhouses and farmer markets and coffee houses and waffle houses.

Everyone wears baggy sweaters and Sperrys in the winter, scrunchies and floral in the spring.

It’s “in” to be conscious about what you’re eating, to go to the gym or yoga classes early in the morning, to stand up against trafficking without doing anything.

So I just want to think: why am I doing what I do? Do I hear about the new thing and rush to make it happen or have it in my closet?

I don’t own Birckenstocks. Scrunchies don’t really work for my hair. I’ve never been to Waffle House.

BUT

I do love a good farmer’s market; I try to work out as often as I can; and I own a baggy sweater because it’s just so comfortable.

How much of culture has soaked into you?

There’s nothing evil about a pair of shoes, but it’s a good time to check yourself. To go back to who you really are, before the culture whispers in your ear and puts predetermined styles on the racks in the store because they want everyone to be the same.

Don’t be afraid to be different.

Are you a follow-the-current kind of person? Have you been noticing everyone’s doing the same things?

So…speaking of culture in influences, why have “most” of our young ladies and many older women forsaken the principles of modesty by wearing skin tight pants/slacks and short dresses, etc? Such a display is really embarrassing and a sight I don’t want my husband or sons to see! What has happened to our Christian culture and biblical principles of modesty. I cringe to think what happens on the beach!

Wow, I love this! It is so easy to just not think about it, but follow what their doing. Though, to be honest, I hate Birckenstocks. So there’s one thing I don’t get pulled into. 😉
Thanks for this post! It got me to thinking.
