Go With the Flow

As Christians, you’ve probably heard the all-too-familiar analogy of a fish swimming against the stream as a caution against going with the flow. So when you read the title of this post, maybe you were a bit confused.

Going against the flow is great . . . in certain cases. But right now, I’m here to make a case for going WITH the flow. *gasps from Christians around the world*

– but first, a short + seemingly random story –

When it’s humid out, my hair frizzes up like no one’s business. I don’t remember it always doing this.

(Guess it’s just one of the benefits of growing up.)

(JOY)

I fought the frizz for years. I tried to straighten it, hairspray it, curl it . . . but none of it worked.

If the humidity was super strong, my hair would uncurl, the hairspray would disintegrate, and straightening would be useless.

Then I realized something: I needed to go with the flow.

Now, if it’s humid out, I combat it in a different way. I don’t give up and just leave my hair in the frizzy mass it is, but I’ve found that braiding it is a pretty good way to keep my hair looking decent.

– here’s the point –

Sometimes in life, you’re going to go through a “humid day.” A day where what you want to happen won’t happen, and you’re trying to brush that hair straight and keep it all under control BUT IT JUST WON’T.

But ya know what? We may just need to accept the bad hair days. We may need to come up with a way to take it in stride. A way to not overthink it; a way to do our best to combat it.

Our plans didn’t turn out. The thoughts we had, the ideas we conjured up: POOF! Good try, better luck next time. But no!! Embrace the less-than-preferable circumstances and totally own it.

Isaiah 55:8-9 (ESV)

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

So, it’s time to throw that frustration out the window. Stop paddling against the current. You don’t have to do this alone! You don’t have to try so hard. Let God have your paddle. Let God have your frizzy hair.

He’s gonna do great things through this.

Can you look back on a trial and see now why it happened? What are your thoughts on going with the flow? Have you ever been super tired because you’ve just been trying too hard?
