Prayer

3 characteristics you should be praying for

My job at work has changed a lot in the new year. It happened suddenly, and now I find myself with a lot of responsibility on my lap. A lot of emotions have come with this, and any negative emotions tend to frustrate me, which just draws out more negative emotions (it’s an evil cycle).

Then I was in church the other night and I realized . . . OH MY GOODNESS. I haven’t been bringing this to God AT. ALL.

Why am I frustrated? Why don’t I have clarity?? Maybe it would help if I were asking for God’s help in all this (does it frustrate you how easy it is to forget God sometimes, ugh).

I started a list of things I wanted to pray for, and it ended up being more than one. So I wanted to share these things with you because, if you’re anything like me, I tend to think “It’s okay I’ve got everything, I’ll pray for others but I don’t need help.”

But mercy heavens . . . how can we help others when we’re falling apart ourselves??

Add these to your morning prayer time

WISDOM

There is an entire book of the Bible dedicated to wisdom: Proverbs! Over and over again, Proverbs hits the nail on the head:

  • Wisdom is more desirable than gold, silver, ANYTHING!
  • You must PURSUE wisdom
  • Wisdom is yours if you only ask for it

Wisdom isn’t the first thing I would think of if asked, “What do you need, Amanda?” (I might say a pack of Oreos or a golden maple latte.) But if God says it’s important, we should 100% have it on our radar.

Wisdom is what will safeguard us from waking up in 20 years and wondering how we got so far from God. Wisdom is what will aid us in making good, God-honoring decisions. Wisdom is what will give us a good reputation that we can use to bring glory to God.

LONGSUFFERING/PATIENCE

It’s easy to be patient when things are going your way, or on Sunday when everyone is watching . . . but what happens Monday morning when traffic is a nightmare and you have coffee spilling down your new Banana Republic blouse?

A lot of things God asks us to do are truly supernatural. It’s not HUMAN to be patient with people . . . it’s not HUMAN to deny instant gratification. But we’re called to a higher purpose than settling for being human.

It’s in things like patience that we can show the world how different we are.

DESIRE FOR GOD & HIS WORD

Our world offers so many other options we can desire. From entertainment to shopping to relationships to our phones, everything begs that we give is more attention that we give our God. And to be human is to go through seasons where you don’t FEEL God’s presence or a desire for Him.

Those are the times when we have to seek Him even harder. Because while our age, circumstances, feelings, and beliefs may change, God never does. He stands firm in a swaying world.

In and of ourselves, we can’t even WANT to serve God (how sad is that??). This is why we must ask Him to give us a passion for Him.
