BOOK CLUB: Idols of the Heart by Elyse Fitzpatrick

Join us for our book club as we read Idols of the Heart by Elyse Fitzpatrick!

Hey friends! I’m Janelle, a writer for OBO magazine. The book I’ll be reviewing today is Idols of the Heart by Elyse Fitzpatrick. (To follow along with our monthly reads, join our free Facebook book club!)

Martha Peace writes “With great clarity and intriguing biblical illustrations, Fitzpatrick explains how idols in our hearts compete with our affections for God. In a gentle way, she tells you how by God’s grace to turn from your idols to a whole-hearted love for God. I highly recommend this book.”

Why do we desire to live godly lives, yet often find ourselves trapped in habitual sin? Fitzpatrick reveals that idolatry lies at the heart of every besetting sin, and helps us uncover hidden idols in our lives by moving us to ask

  • Why does the Bible warn about the deceitfulness of sin?
  • What must I have for my life to be meaningful and happy?
  • Do I love God whole-heartedly or are there other loves in my heart that clamor for my attention?

She offers readers the hope found in God’s desire to have his children live free of idols, and his commitment to free them by his sanctifying power through Jesus Christ. (Amazon summery)

Why I chose this book

I wanted to review this book for several reasons. This book takes a deep look into our motives and actions, I wanted something that would challenge and convict me to pursue Jesus in a deeper way.

From the little bit I’ve read, I’m assuming Fitzpatrick talks quite a bit on how the Old Testament plays a key part in loving God alone, which I find fascinating.

How did I find this book?

I found this book after several of my friends recommended it to me!

My expectations

I’m expecting that this will be an excellent book that will bring to light things I might have loved or spent more time pursuing rather than Christ. So it goes without saying that I fully expect to be challenged and convicted to seek God alone.

Also, I’m so excited about studying  more on the Old Testament since this is a subject I want to learn more about.

I can’t wait to share Idols of the Heart with you all! I will have a full review coming out at the of the month!
